Organization and Access

Description

The organization of this collection will follow the model of the rest of the library. It will be organized by the Dewey decimal system, and be placed along with the current young adult collection of fiction in its own dedicated area with one librarian and two assistants. Within this section, reference books will be shelved separate from the rest of the collection. Magazines and audio/visual materials will be separated as well. Within this area a bank of computers, at least five, dedicated to the young adult section will be located.

Subject Access

The nonfiction collection will be a part of the young adult section of the library rather than intermixed with adult material which would make the materials invisible to both patrons and staff. Many of the titles will be displayed with the cover out so as to draw attention to them. We will also feature certain titles each week to increase visibility.

Each book will be marked with a sticker on the spine indicating that it is a part of our "Life Skills" collection. This sticker will be placed directly above the corresponding Dewey decimal call number. Magazines will be kept in a separate rack for use inside the young adult area.

Our bank of computers will have its own young adult home page. The interface of this page will provide for greater subject access. For example, a nonfiction link will provide direct access to the special "life skills" collection. Here we will provide subject headings such as "physical fitness". By clicking on the subject headings, young adult patrons will be given lists of suggested titles.

Search and Retrieval

Material in the collection is cataloged using Voyager, which is an integrated management system for libraries by Endeavor that includes cataloging, catalog access, and circulation. Once an item record is saved to the catalog database in Voyager, the item can then be searched for and found in the online library catalog. Important information in the item record includes title, author, call number, and location.

Users access the online library catalog through the homepage of the library website by clicking on the Search the Library Catalog link. Users can then choose to search the library catalog through Quick Search or Advanced Search. Quick Search allows users to search by Any Word Anywhere or by single attributes such as title, author, subject, and call number. Quick Search is most suitable for users searching for a known item. Advanced Search allows users to search using keywords located anywhere in a record or keywords only in specific fields. Users can search for one or more words in any order or as a phrase. Users can also combine or exclude words and phrases. Advanced Search is most suitable for users searching a specific topic but not a known item.

After users decide on keywords and click search, the catalog displays a list of all possible search results in alphabetical order. Attributes included in the search results list include title, full title, author, date, library location, call number, and status. When users click on the title or full title, then the catalog displays the full catalog record for the item. Attributes included in the full catalog record include title, author, publisher, physical description, subject headings, ISBN, institution, location, call number, copy, and status. Users can print out the item record or write down the call number and location information and then retrieve the item from the library stacks.
