Music is simply the art of arranging specific sounds in a structured period of time to create a combination of melodies and harmonies that are pleasing to the ear. Amazing, however, is the way music is listened to with different degrees of enjoyment. Some people merely like the way music can bring them down or make them high. Others tenaciously cling to their passion for it, believing music can heal the broken heart and save the immortal soul. When asked what type of music he or she likes, the appreciator will respond with a few genres or specific groups or even with the claim that he or she has no favorites but listens to music purely to listen to music. The ears of these music supporters recognize the aesthetic values of the art. They are inclined to have it play repetitively in the background rather than make it a part of their life. For the fanatic, music is a thrill. They usually listen to only a few select favorite bands or singers. A vehement passion for the music is shown through a collection of albums and knowledge of lyrics. Enthusiastic advocates enjoy the emotions music creates. When feeling down, an aficionado will turn on the radio and smile as an upbeat song lifts away his or her burdens. Fanatics regard music as a soundtrack to life and, consequently, live by the music. The most intense music devotee is the groupie. Usually female, these music fans listen to the one band they believe is the epitome of music and exist not only by the music but also for the music. Ardent followers, though having the same symptoms as the enthusiast, are frequently viewed as being overzealous and obsessive. They have an extreme desire and determination to get next to the musician as well as be near the music. Groupies hold more devotion to the band than the actual music. Some people enjoy music simply for the artistic meanings of the music while others hold something so passionate that their love extends to the musicians who make the music over and above the music itself. Ever intriguing is the way different people respond to music. Merely an arrangement of sounds in a continuous and unified manner creating euphony, music brings varying intensities of pleasure to different listeners.
